Vikings beat Falcons by 8 wickets in T20 blast

Local young gun steals the show for Vikings

Aaron Finch has made a winning start to his county stint with Yorkshire, striking 19 runs at the top of the order to help his Vikings side to an eight-wicket win over Derbyshire Falcons in his first match of England's domestic Twenty20 competition, the T20 Blast.

Finch managed just the one four and a six in his 17-ball innings, falling caught and bowled to the part-time spin of compatriot, and recently retired Sheffield Shield player of the year, Marcus North.

The Australian’s six was the only shot to the clear the boundary rope in the Yorkshire innings, as local young gun Alex Lees (61 off 44) and England international Jonny Bairstow (29 off 16) chased down the meagre target of 128 in 14 overs.

Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid did the damage with the ball for Yorkshire, picking up two wickets apiece as the home side restricted Derbyshire to 6-127 off their 20 overs.

Much like Finch, North failed to trouble the scorers to any great extent, bowled by Rashid for 5.

Despite the big win, former Australian and current Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie will have plenty to work on during the week with at least five clear-cut opportunities going down in the field, four by 20-year-old Jack Leaning.

The missed opportunities capped a horror day for the right-arm off spinner, who also went for 12 runs in his lone over.

Yorkshire will next take on top-of-the-table Lancashire Lightning, the Old Trafford-based club recently announcing the return of former England great Andrew Flintoff to their ranks for the 2014 season.
